Underwater Photogrammetry
According to Wikipedia, "Photogrammetry is the science and technology of obtaining reliable information about physical objects and the environment through the process of recording, measuring and interpreting photographic images and patterns of electromagnetic radiant imagery and other phenomena."

And if that description isn't enough to put anybody off the art of photogrammetry then nothing will!
The process of creating a 3D model with photogrammetry is one of taking lots of overlapping photographs and stitching them together using photogrammetry software. The software creates the 3D model and other products like photomosaic maps. It has become an efficient way to rapidly record underwater archaeological sites, shipwreck features or even entire wrecks! It can also be used to characterise seafloor features, such as coral reefs and be used to record how such features change over time!

Photogrammetry, put simply, is cool. And underwater photogrammetry is even cooler! Combine the skill-set with videography, animation & editing skills and you can create some powerful and visually stunning results. Your imagination is your only limitation really.

The videos below will give you a flavour of the sort of thing that you can create. You don't necessarily need high end photographic equipment, an iPhone and an underwater housing or a GoPro and underwater housing can both produce some incredible results.

Our Photogrammetry workshops and courses are available to all club members. Please 'Contact Us' or speak to one of our instructors if you would like further information or to arrange a workshop or course.

Courses are available as either a PADI Distinctive 'Photogrammetry Diver' or the IANTD 'Skills for Photogrammetry'.
Both courses focus on the skill-set needed to undertake underwater photogrammetry safely, with an emphasis on gas management, task-focusing awareness, NDL/DECO awareness as well as working as a team.

Both the courses and the workshops will take you through the skills needed to take the underwater photographs and how to set-up the software and produce results.

Further workshops will expand on the basic skills learned and advance your knowledge even further.
“THE KEY TO UNDERWATER PHOTOGRAPHY IS MIXING LIGHT: AMBIENT AND STROBE. MIXING IT THE WAY YOU WANT. THIS IS ART.”
